Does Delta-8 THC Show Up on a Drug Test?
Short answer: Yes. Delta-8 THC is very likely to trigger a positive result on a standard cannabis drug test. The tests screen for THC metabolites, and delta-8 produces the same family of metabolites as delta-9 — including 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC (THC-COOH), the molecule most urine immunoassays are built to detect.

Why delta-8 triggers a positive
Most workplace and pre-employment screens are immunoassays. They do not identify a specific cannabinoid. They use antibodies that bind to THC metabolites, and they are calibrated to flag anything above a cutoff — commonly 50 ng/mL for the initial screen, with a 15 ng/mL confirmation threshold.
Delta-8 is close enough to delta-9 that its metabolites cross-react with those antibodies. Your body also converts delta-8 into metabolites that are structurally nearly identical to the ones produced by delta-9. So even a test that is “specific” to cannabis cannot reliably distinguish the two.
How long does delta-8 stay detectable?
| Test type | Typical detection window |
|---|---|
| Urine — single use | 1–3 days |
| Urine — moderate use (several times a week) | 3–7 days |
| Urine — heavy or daily use | 10–30 days, sometimes longer |
| Urine — chronic high-dose concentrates or edibles | Up to 30–45 days |
| Blood | Hours to a few days |
| Saliva | Roughly 1–3 days |
| Hair | Up to 90 days |
These are ranges, not guarantees. Delta-8 is often consumed in high-dose edibles and vapes, which can push detection toward the longer end. See how long delta-8 stays in your system for the factors that move the number.
What makes detection longer
- Frequency. Daily use accumulates metabolites in fat tissue, which then release slowly.
- Dose and product type. Concentrates and edibles deliver more cannabinoid than a single puff.
- Body composition. THC metabolites are fat-soluble; higher body fat generally means slower clearance.
- Metabolism and hydration. Faster metabolism clears faster; dehydration concentrates urine.
- Liver function. Most metabolism happens in the liver.
Does CBD cause a false positive?
Rarely, and usually only with very high doses of full-spectrum CBD that contains trace THC. CBD isolate should not trigger a positive on its own. The more common scenario is a “CBD” product that also contains delta-8 or delta-9 — which is common in the hemp market and is exactly why certificates of analysis matter.
Can you flush delta-8 out faster?
There is no reliable way to beat a test. What actually happens with “detox” products:
- Dilution (drinking a lot of water) can lower metabolite concentration below the cutoff, but labs flag diluted samples by creatine and specific gravity, and many require a retest.
- Niacin, vinegar, cranberry juice and herbal cleansers have no good evidence behind them.
- Substitution or adulteration is detectable and, depending on the context, may be a separate offense.
The only dependable approach is time. If you have a test scheduled and you use delta-8, stop now and assume a multi-week window.
Can a lab tell delta-8 from delta-9?
Yes — but only with a more advanced method than the standard screen. Laboratories using LC-MS/MS or GC-MS can separate delta-8 from delta-9 and report each individually. That matters in a few contexts:
- Legal and regulatory testing, where the distinction affects product classification.
- Workplace disputes, where a confirmatory test may show which cannabinoid was present.
- Probation and court-ordered testing, where the specific metabolite profile may be requested.
Most routine employment screens do not do this. They report “positive for THC” and stop.
What about other hemp cannabinoids?
Assume the same answer for HHC, THCP and THCO. All are structurally close to THC, all are likely to cross-react on an immunoassay, and none has a well-established “safe for drug testing” profile. There is no hemp-derived intoxicant that is reliably invisible to a cannabis test.
Frequently asked questions
Will one delta-8 gummy show up on a drug test?
Possibly. A single low dose can clear within 1–3 days, but edibles often deliver enough to be detected longer. If the test is within a week, assume risk.
Does delta-8 show up as THC or as something else?
As THC. Standard screens report a single “THC” result and do not distinguish delta-8 from delta-9.
Can I use delta-8 if I have a CDL or DOT test?
No. DOT-regulated testing follows federal rules and does not recognize any hemp-derived THC exception. A positive is a positive.
Is secondhand delta-8 exposure enough to fail?
Very unlikely from incidental vapor exposure, but possible in a small, unventilated space with heavy use. The bigger risk is sharing a vape or edible.
