What Is THCH?
Short answer: THCH (tetrahydrocannabihexol) is a cannabinoid with a six-carbon side chain — one carbon longer than delta-9 THC and one shorter than THCP. Published receptor work suggests it binds CB1 more strongly than delta-9, which is why it is sold as a high-potency novelty. There are no controlled human studies on it, so almost every consumer claim about THCH is extrapolation.
Last reviewed: November 4, 2026. Commercial THCH is manufactured outside the plant, so products containing it lose federal hemp status on December 11, 2026. See the 2026 hemp law explained. Educational information only — not medical or legal advice.
Where THCH sits in the family
The THC family is largely a story about side-chain length. The core structure is similar; the tail varies.
| Cannabinoid | Side chain | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| THCV | 3 carbons (propyl) | Shorter; dose-dependent, often non-intoxicating at low doses |
| Delta-9 THC | 5 carbons (pentyl) | The reference compound; extensive research |
| THCH | 6 carbons (hexyl) | Longer; reported higher CB1 affinity; almost no human data |
| THCP | 7 carbons (heptyl) | Longest common variant; the “33x” claim comes from this one |
The pattern is that longer chains tend to increase receptor affinity in laboratory assays. That does not translate cleanly into subjective potency, duration or safety, and the human data does not exist to settle it.
What we actually know
- It occurs naturally in cannabis, in trace amounts, alongside THC and THCP.
- Commercial THCH is synthesized, typically through conversion chemistry similar to delta-8 and THCP production.
- Receptor assays suggest higher CB1 affinity than delta-9. The magnitude reported varies between sources, and numbers circulating on vendor sites are often unsourced.
- There are no controlled human studies on effects, dosing or safety.
That is the honest inventory. When a cannabinoid has no human research, any confident statement about how it feels is either an anecdote or a sales claim.
Why “delta-9 THCH” is a confusing label
Some products are sold as “delta-9 THCH,” which usually means a blend containing delta-9 THC and THCH. The category exists because producers combine a familiar cannabinoid with a novel one — the delta-9 provides predictable effects and the THCH provides a reason to charge more.
If you are evaluating one of these, the question is not “what does THCH do” but “what is the ratio.” A product that is 95% delta-9 and 2% THCH is a delta-9 product. The COA is the only place that ratio appears.
What to check
- THCH quantified separately. If the lab cannot distinguish THCH from delta-9 or THCP, you do not know what you have.
- The full cannabinoid profile. Blends are the norm, and the dominant cannabinoid determines the experience.
- Residual solvents and reagents. THCH is synthesized; purification is the variable that matters.
- Total THC per container. Relevant to the 2026 federal cap and to drug testing.
- Batch match and date. Trace cannabinoids are easy to lose in a reformulation.
See how to read a COA and the THCP buying guide, which covers the same evaluation logic for a closely related compound.
Is THCH legal?
Federal: THCH occurs naturally in cannabis in trace amounts, so the November 12, 2026 exclusion — aimed at cannabinoids the plant cannot produce — does not automatically capture it. But commercial THCH is manufactured outside the plant, which brings it under the December 11, 2026 exclusion for naturally occurring cannabinoids produced synthetically. On that date it loses federal hemp status, alongside commercial delta-8, delta-10 and THCP.
State: several states capture THCH under broad intoxicating-hemp definitions rather than naming it. That creates ambiguity, not permission.
Frequently asked questions
Is THCH stronger than THC?
Laboratory receptor data suggests higher CB1 affinity than delta-9. The human magnitude is unknown, and claims of a specific multiplier are usually unsourced.
Is THCH natural?
It occurs naturally in trace amounts. Commercial THCH is synthesized.
Is THCH legal?
It loses federal hemp status on December 11, 2026 when manufactured outside the plant. State law varies.
Does THCH show up on a drug test?
Assume yes. It is structurally close to THC and likely produces cross-reacting metabolites.
What is the difference between THCH and THCP?
Side-chain length — six carbons versus seven. Both are minor, synthesized for commerce, and poorly studied in humans. THCP has more public attention because of the 33x binding claim.
Is THCH safe?
There is no human safety data. That is the answer, not a dodge.
