How to Choose a CBG Product
Short answer: CBG is scarce in the plant and expensive to produce, which makes actual CBG content the number to verify — and the number most likely to be overstated. Compare price per milligram of CBG, check that the COA quantifies CBG separately from CBD, and ignore claims that CBG is a superior version of CBD. The human evidence for CBG is far thinner.

Why CBG is priced the way it is
CBG is the precursor that THC, CBD and other cannabinoids are built from as the plant matures. By the time cannabis is harvested, most of the CBG has already converted. What remains is a small fraction of the total cannabinoid content.
That scarcity drives everything:
- Extracting CBG requires more raw plant material per milligram than CBD.
- Some producers use specialised chemotypes or synthesis to increase yield.
- Retail prices per milligram are substantially higher than CBD.
It also creates the main buying risk. Because CBG is expensive, a product can be labelled “CBG” while being mostly CBD. The label is not necessarily false — the product may contain some CBG — but the premium may not be buying what you think.
The checks
1. Milligrams of CBG per serving
Get the figure. Then compare it with the total cannabinoid content. A product with 500 mg of cannabinoids and 10 mg of CBG is a CBD product with a CBG label.
2. Price per milligram of CBG
Divide the price by the CBG content, not the total cannabinoid content. This is the only comparison that means anything across products. Expect CBG to cost more than CBD per milligram; expect a wide spread between sellers.
3. A COA that separates CBG from CBD
CBG and CBD are close chemically, and cheap analytical methods sometimes report them poorly. The report should show CBG as its own quantified value with a stated limit of quantification.
4. Total THC per container
Full-spectrum CBG products carry trace THC. After December 11, 2026, the cap is 0.4 mg total THC per container and the standard includes THCA. Check the figure, especially on a large bottle. See the 2026 law.
5. Contaminant panels
Pesticides, heavy metals, microbials and mycotoxins. Hemp is a bioaccumulator, and CBG is often produced from specialised cultivars grown outdoors.
Our COA guide covers how to read each panel.
CBG vs CBD: what the evidence supports
| CBG | CBD | |
|---|---|---|
| Intoxicating | No | No |
| Abundance in plant | Low | High |
| Human clinical evidence | Very limited | Substantial, including an FDA-approved drug |
| Typical price per mg | Higher | Lower |
| Main marketed uses | Focus, inflammation, general wellness | Anxiety, sleep, general wellness |
Most CBG research is preclinical — cells and animals. Areas under study include inflammation, glaucoma-related intraocular pressure, antibacterial activity and appetite. Promising early signals are not evidence that CBG treats anything in humans. The gap between “active in a mouse model” and “works in people” is where most cannabinoid marketing lives.
There is also a persistent claim that CBG is “the mother of all cannabinoids” and therefore more complete or more effective. It is the precursor — that part is true — but precursor status says nothing about therapeutic value.
Formats and what to expect
| Format | Typical CBG content | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CBG isolate | High, disclosed | Easiest to verify; usually a powder or in a carrier oil |
| CBG oil / tincture | Variable | Check mg per ml, not per bottle |
| CBG gummies | Low to moderate | Often CBG plus CBD; check per-piece dosing |
| Full-spectrum extract | Low | CBG present as a minor cannabinoid, not a featured dose |
| Capsules | Variable | Standardised, but confirm the CBG figure separately from CBD |
If you specifically want CBG, an isolate or a product with a disclosed CBG milligram figure is the only way to know what you are getting. A full-spectrum extract marketed on its CBG content is usually mostly CBD.
Claims to discount
- “CBG is more effective than CBD.” No head-to-head human evidence supports this.
- Specific disease claims. The evidence is preclinical.
- “Contains CBG” without a milligram figure. That is a statement about presence, not dose.
- Antibacterial claims. Laboratory activity against bacteria does not translate into a product you should take for an infection.
- Higher price equals higher quality. Higher price is expected for CBG; it does not mean the CBG is there in the amount claimed.
Legal status
Federal: hemp-derived CBG is legal within THC limits. It is non-intoxicating and is not the target of the 2026 cannabinoid exclusions. Full-spectrum CBG products must still meet the 0.4 mg total-THC-per-container cap after December 11, 2026.
State: CBG generally follows CBD rules, with variation in labelling and testing requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Does CBG get you high?
No. CBG is non-intoxicating.
Is CBG better than CBD?
Different, not better. CBG has far less human research, and the two are often used together. There is no evidence that one is superior.
Why is CBG more expensive than CBD?
Because it is present in the plant in much smaller quantities, so more raw material is needed to extract a given amount.
How do I know a CBG product contains CBG?
The COA should quantify CBG separately from CBD, with a milligram figure per serving. A “contains CBG” claim without a number is not verifiable.
Is CBG legal?
Hemp-derived CBG is federally legal within THC limits. State rules vary.
Can I take CBG with CBD?
They are commonly combined and there is no known reason to avoid it, but there is also little clinical evidence on the combination. Check with a clinician if you take prescription medication.
