What Is CBDV?
Short answer: CBDV (cannabidivarin) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid structurally related to CBD. It has been studied mainly in the context of epilepsy, with early results that overlap with CBD’s, but human data is limited and it is not an approved treatment for anything.

What CBDV is
CBDV has the same core structure as CBD but a shorter side chain — propyl instead of pentyl, the same change that distinguishes THCV from THC. It occurs naturally in cannabis, particularly in some landrace varieties and in hemp with certain chemotypes, but only in small amounts.
Like CBD, CBDV is non-intoxicating and does not produce a high. It is being studied for neurological targets, most notably seizure disorders.
What the research says
- Epilepsy: preclinical and early clinical work has looked at CBDV for seizures, building on the CBD pathway. Results are preliminary.
- Nausea and gastrointestinal function: animal studies have explored effects on nausea and gut motility.
- Inflammation: early preclinical work.
There is no large randomized trial of CBDV in humans that would support a treatment claim. It is behind CBD by roughly a decade of research.
Why CBDV products exist
CBDV is usually sold as part of a broad-spectrum or full-spectrum hemp extract, where it appears alongside CBD and other minor cannabinoids. Standalone CBDV products are less common and usually more expensive, because the cannabinoid is scarce in the plant.
Be skeptical of products that market CBDV as a distinct, superior ingredient. In most full-spectrum products it is present at a fraction of the CBD content.
CBDV vs CBD
| CBDV | CBD | |
|---|---|---|
| Intoxicating | No | No |
| Side chain | 3 carbons | 5 carbons |
| Abundance | Low | High |
| Research stage | Early preclinical / small trials | Substantial, including an FDA-approved drug |
Is CBDV legal?
Federally, hemp-derived CBDV is legal within THC limits. It is non-intoxicating and not affected by the cannabinoid exclusions in the 2026 law. Full-spectrum products must still meet the 0.4 mg total-THC-per-container cap after December 11, 2026.
At the state level, CBDV generally follows CBD rules, with the same variation in labeling and testing requirements.
What to check on a CBDV product
- Actual CBDV content. Confirm it is labeled and tested, not implied.
- Batch COA. Potency and total THC.
- Whether it is a blend. Most CBDV arrives inside a broad-spectrum extract, which is fine — just know what you are paying for.

Frequently asked questions
Does CBDV get you high?
No. CBDV is non-intoxicating.
Is CBDV legal?
Hemp-derived CBDV is federally legal within THC limits. State rules vary.
Is CBDV better than CBD for seizures?
Unknown. CBDV is being studied for seizures, but CBD is the cannabinoid with an FDA-approved prescription product and far more human data.
Why is CBDV hard to find?
It occurs in the plant in small quantities, so it is expensive to isolate and often appears only in full-spectrum blends.
