Delta-8 Dosage: A Practical Guide

Short answer: There is no official delta-8 dose. A reasonable starting point for most adults is 2.5–5 mg, taken once and then left alone for at least two hours. Moderate doses are commonly 5–15 mg. Above 20 mg, most users report strong or uncomfortable effects. Edibles are the main source of bad experiences because onset is slow and people re-dose too early.

Why there is no standard dose

Delta-8 is not an approved drug, so there is no established therapeutic dose and no regulatory body publishing one. The ranges below come from user reports and comparison with delta-9, adjusted for delta-8’s generally lower potency. They are a starting framework, not a prescription.

Two things make dosing harder than it looks:

  • Label accuracy varies. Independent testing has repeatedly found delta-8 products that contained more or less than the label claimed — sometimes none at all.
  • Individual sensitivity varies enormously. Tolerance, body weight, metabolism, liver enzymes and prior cannabis experience all shift the response.

Common dose ranges

Range Delta-8 What most people report
Low 2.5–5 mg Mild relaxation, subtle mood lift, little impairment
Moderate 5–15 mg Clear intoxicating effect, relaxation, altered time sense
High 15–30 mg Strong effects, possible anxiety, impaired coordination
Very high 30 mg+ Uncomfortable for most; higher risk of panic or nausea

These numbers assume an edible. Inhaled delta-8 takes effect within minutes, so the effective dose per puff is much smaller and easier to titrate.

Edible vs inhaled

Edible Vape / inhaled
Onset 30–90 minutes Within minutes
Peak 2–3 hours 10–30 minutes
Duration 4–8 hours 1–3 hours
Ease of titration Low High

If you are new, an edible is the harder place to start because you cannot undo a dose. A low-dose edible taken once, with no re-dosing, is the safer version of that choice.

The two-hour rule

This is the single most useful rule in this guide: wait at least two hours before taking more.

Most “delta-8 was too strong” stories are not about a high dose. They are about a normal dose taken twice because the first one had not kicked in yet. By the time the second dose is absorbed, the first is peaking, and the combined effect is twice what was intended.

What changes your dose

  • Tolerance. Regular users need more; new users need much less.
  • Body weight and composition. THC-class cannabinoids are fat-soluble.
  • Metabolism. Liver enzyme activity varies widely between people.
  • Food. Taking an edible with a fatty meal can increase absorption and delay onset.
  • Product accuracy. A “10 mg” gummy may not contain 10 mg.
  • Other substances. Alcohol and other depressants compound impairment.

If you take too much

Delta-8 overdose is not known to be life-threatening in the way opioid overdose is, but it can be extremely unpleasant: panic, racing heart, nausea, dizziness, dissociation. What helps:

  • Stay calm and remind yourself it will pass — the peak is usually over within a few hours.
  • Sit or lie down somewhere safe.
  • Drink water.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Have someone stay with you if you are very uncomfortable.
  • Seek medical help for chest pain, severe vomiting, or if you have a heart condition.

A note on the 2026 law

Commercial delta-8 loses federal hemp status on December 11, 2026, and many states have restricted it independently. Dosing advice does not change the legal picture. See the 2026 hemp law explained.

Frequently asked questions

How many mg of delta-8 should a beginner take?

2.5–5 mg, once, with at least two hours before considering more. If you have no cannabis tolerance, start at the low end.

How long does delta-8 take to kick in?

Edibles: 30–90 minutes, sometimes longer. Vapes: within minutes.

How long does delta-8 last?

Edibles typically 4–8 hours; inhaled, 1–3 hours. After-effects such as fatigue can linger.

Can you build a tolerance to delta-8?

Yes. Regular use reduces sensitivity, and the effect returns after a break.

Is 25 mg of delta-8 a lot?

For most people, yes. It is in the high range and is more likely to produce anxiety or impaired coordination.
